how to install a water softener

Plumbing DIY is not designed for everyone, but with the right tools and information, you can easily hack it. Some of the projects involved in plumbing are not as difficult as people think. When you are installing a water softener, you need proper tools and patience to ensure that the device you’ve invested money in works perfectly.

Installation Guide

Usually this device comes with installation manual which you must read carefully before you begin the process. Different water softener brands and models have their own specifics in terms of installation procedures although most have a standard procedure. Consider the location where you wish to install the softener. You can choose to keep the tank inside the house but ensure the place is dry with normal temperatures.

If you are installing two tanks close together, make the brine tank to be more accessible as it’s the one you have to refill often. If you install the tank outside the house place it away from direct sunlight. Alternatively, buy a protective cover unit to protect the tank against harsh weather and sun. Additionally, the power outlet should be below fifty feet from the water unit.

Likewise you need a drain in the area which must be at least one and a half inches. Use a tubing to extend a drain which can be put a few meters from the tank. You can opt for a more rigid PVC tube or flexible tubing either of which should extend to the drain to direct the backwash to the drain. You may wish to install the media if it did not come already fixed. This depends on your tank size and if it has a tabulator. Generally, large tanks require gravel under bed.

Place the gravel in place and follow the directions for installing media in the tank as well as the bypass valve. The inlet outlet water connections should be placed depending on installation instructions. At this point, take the brine tubing then connect the softener control valve to the brine tank. You can now connect the brine tank overflow once the tubing is in place. Simply do this by attaching the tubing from the brine into the drain.

Remember to program the control valve that is meant to soften the water. Additionally, run the back wash cycle and spot any leaks and fix them by tightening the fittings. Observe the tank as it runs as it runs just to be sure everything is working correctly. Once there is a steady flow of water from the drain, you should open the water supply valve completely. The idea is to follow the instruction manual to the latter and soon you will have a well functional unit.
